Pattern in Repeat I with Kate Zaremba

In this 4-week course we will begin with learning about the various pattern layouts and terminology used when creating patterns for wallpaper and textile design. We will look at patterns, and processes for creating patterns, throughout history and art. We will practice analogue pattern making techniques using drawing, painting, paper-cut out, and block printing. We will primarily be working on paper throughout this course, however in our final class you will create your own block for block printing on textiles. You are invited to bring your own textile item for printing on, however, fabric will be provided as well as all printing materials and block making supplies.

About the instructor:

Kate Zaremba is an artist based in Brooklyn who specializes in wallpaper and textile design. As a kid, Kate grew up on theatre sets and sound stages as a child actress, providing a WILD childhood lived on sound stages and sets in a world of make believe. No doubt, this is what led to a career creating artful backdrops for people's lives as a wallpaper designer.

Kate's wallpapers have been featured in Elle Decor, Dwell, Domino Magazine, The Times UK, House and Garden, HGTV Mag, and more. She has created textiles for fashion designer Rachel Antonoff, a collection of home goods for West Elm, among many other collaborations.

Kate holds a BFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the Kansas City Art Institute, with a focus in textiles and ceramics, and an MA in Exhibition Design from the Corcoran College of Art and Design.
