We are thrilled to announced that this 7-week MIDDLE SCHOOL PORTFOLIO CLASS will be led by the wonderful Kelly Oh, a Pratt Institute Art and Design Education professor who has been an active member in the arts education world in New York City since 2009. She has served as a high school art teacher in NYC public schools, including Brooklyn Latin School and Millennium Brooklyn. (Her full bio is below!)

Course Description:

This course is for middle students who are interested in learning skills in drawing and painting. Art works created during the fall sessions may meet the requirements for the arts high school portfolio auditions. Students will explore and develop skills in composition, drawing from observation, shading, mark-making, among other techniques while using drawing and painting materials such as graphite, color pencils, oil pastels, microns, watercolor, and more. 

In the second fall session (November 5th - December 17th) students will be working on the following projects:

  • Figure drawing from observation (in graphite)

  • Fantastical sandwich (in color pencils)

  • additional drawing projects if time permits

When: Tuesdays 4:00 - 6:00

Dates: Nov. 5th, 12th, Nov. 19th, Nov 26th, Dec. 3rd, Dec. 10th, Dec. 17th.

Where: The Painting School, 65 Woodhull Street, Brooklyn

Prorated Cost: $350 (we prorate the class after each week so that children can join at any time in the series if there is space.)

Instructor’s Bio

Kelly Oh has been an active member in the arts education world in New York City since 2009. Working with a diverse population, she has taught youths as a high school art teacher in NYC public schools, such as Brooklyn Latin School and Millennium Brooklyn High School, and a teaching-artist in community-based cultural organizations.  Her experiences include teaching foundational art courses focused around technical and conceptual skills building, IB Visual Arts, Art History, portfolio prep for both middle school and high school students. She is not only interested in helping her students develop their technical skills but also finding personal connection and joy in making art.  Many of her students have been accepted to competitive art high schools in NYC and colleges across the US.  Currently, she teaches at Pratt Institute.  She is a tireless advocate for stronger arts programs for youths and believes that art should be relevant and accessible to individuals of all age groups from all different backgrounds.
