Craft Your Story - A Collage, Memoir and Storytelling Workshop with Jonell Joshua- April 6th

Join Author and Illustrator, Jonell Joshua for a collage, memoir and storytelling workshop. Jonell will share some of her illustration and writing techniques used to craft her debut memoir, How Do I Draw These Memories? An Illustrated Memoir. Participants will unlock the power of their own stories to craft “mini memoirs” through the use of collage techniques and journaling prompts. This workshop is great for those interested in kick starting their writing process or anyone interested in storytelling, memoir, and bookmaking. All skill levels welcome!

Objectives & Expectations:

  • Craft and journal from your memories to tell your story

  • Unlock the power of your own storytelling

  • Meet IRL to cultivate joy, community and share your lived experience with others.

  • Participants should come prepared with a cellular device to search for memories on their phone. (Participants are also welcome to bring physical copies of photos!)

  • Leave with a crafted project that shares your story!

More about the instructor: Bio:

Jonell Joshua is an Author & Illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from Pratt Institute where she received her BFA in Communications Design with a focus in Illustration. Jonell’s artwork has explored a range of themes and stories, creating illustrations for clients including The New York Times, New York MagazineThe Washington Post, PBS, NPR, and Warby Parker. Her work has been recognized by The Society of Illustrators and American Illustration: International Motion Art Awards, and in 2024 Jonell was the featured artist for The 6th Annual Schomburg Center Literary Festival. 

 

Jonell’s latest project, How Do I Draw These Memories? An Illustrated Memoir, released everywhere on April 16, 2024. Since the release of her memoir, Jonell has facilitated storytelling workshops and has been a guest panelist at San Diego Comic Con on “How Comics Can Empower Marginalized Teens,” Brooklyn Book Festival panel “Are We Okay?,” featured in People Magazine, and NCTE Conference panel/workshop “Writing Memoir with YA Authors.” To learn more about Jonell Joshua and her practice, visit www.jonelljoshua.com.
